'taper'
22 november - 7 january 2009
Internationally acclaimed sculptor Neil Dawson will stage his next major exhibition in the country side of Mahana, Nelson. In ‘Taper’ Dawson will explore new ideas, with an exhibition which will transition from the Gallery walls to the outside lawn with a series of slender sentinels.
Dawson knows how to make good use of the interplay of the invariable and the unexpected, while his subtle use of materials explores the possibilities of equivocation in the object and the forms they take on. Often described as serendipitous his sculptures offer a multitude of perspectives that people can discover for themselves as they move around and in front of them taking in their form. ‘Taper’ will further explore this combination of an inherent contradiction, at once fragile and substantive. Inspired by a public sculpture, Bomber Command, the Australian war memorial in Canberra, but to a scale mindful of private art collections, Dawson’s new sculpture will continue to prove both compelling and inspiring.
