beyond the image
19 December 2009 - 20 January 2010
Darryn George and Noel Ivanoff combine their trajectory with works that defy image retention . Their work is not predicated on image but on the experience. The experience is either evoked through line and process or through colour and plane. In contrast, Laurence Aberhart, Chris Charteris, Simon Kaan, Kelcy Taratoa and Ben Webb use the image to evoke experience beyond the defining image.

Not surprising that Ben Webb's still life and portraiture has been described as having a certain European sensibility, unburdened of guilt and un-judgmental. His flowers are a case in point; still life objects which beg to be viewed as both beautiful and disarming. Embracing a dispassionate post expressionist trajectory, Webb produces his painted photographs as simultaneously wonderful and awful in a way that invites us to stand back and simply observe them as that. Deliberately so, the images are neither politically engaging nor socially critical. Webb art entreats us not to make judgment, but to appreciate these paintings for what they are.
